MANGOSTEEN

The mangosteen is a fruit originating in Southeast Asia. Its refreshing balance of sweet and sour is savored and revered for its yin and yang duality, especially in Asia. The mangosteen has a soft white edible center. To get to the fruit, you need to hold it with the stem-end downward, take a sharp knife and cut around the middle completely through the rind. Lift off the top half, which leaves the fleshy segments exposed in the colorful “cup” – the bottom half of the rind. The segments are lifted out by fork. The large segments have one seed and the small sections are seedless. The juice is a delicious blend of acids and sugars. Still relatively unknown to US consumers, mangosteens have only recently been imported into the United States. Their popularity, however, is growing rapidly. Mangosteens are usually eaten fresh as an exotic dessert.
